Augmentation of a Global Positioning System (GPS) signal is a method of improving the air
navigation requirements such as accuracy, integrity, availability, and continuity
through the integration of external information into the calculation process. Some additional
information about sources of error (such as clock drift, ephemeris, or ionospheric
delay), will help the calculation process to improve the Signal-in Space (SIS) accuracy. GBAS is
a system that supports augmentation through the use of terrestrial radio messages. As GBAS
is commonly composed of one or more accurately surveyed ground stations, which take
measurements with GPS, and one or more radio transmitters, which transmit the
information directly to the end user. Generally, GBAS networks are considered localized, supporting receivers within 20NM, and transmitting the errors and other data on the Very High
Frequency (VHF) or Ultra High Frequency (UHF) bands.

ADS-B determines its own position using a global navigation satellite system (GNSS)
particularly Global Positioning System (GPS) constellation and periodically broadcasts
its position and other relevant information to potential ground stations and for other
aircrafts which are equipped with ADS-B-IN equipment on board. ADS-B can be used over several
different data link technologies, including Mode-S Extended Squitter (1090 ES),
Universal Access Transceiver (978 MHz UAT), and VHF data link (VDL Mode 4). A special
implementation of the ADS-B concept for general aviation aircraft is FLARM, highly optimized for the purposes of gliding. ADS-B provides accurate information and frequent updates to
airspace users and controllers, and hence supports improved use of airspace, reduced ceiling /
visibility restrictions, improved surface surveillance, and enhanced safety through
conflict management. A vehicle equipped with ADS-B gives periodical broadcasts to its own state
vector and other information without knowing what other vehicles or entities might be
receiving it, and without expectation of an acknowledgment or reply. ADS-B is automatic
in the sense that no pilot or controller action is required for the information to be
issued.

It is dependent surveillance in the sense that the surveillance-type information so
obtained
depends on the suitable navigation and broadcast capability in the source vehicle.
